Joe Maddox created a beautiful Japanese garden in Terrace Park in the 1930s. It was so fine that Better Homes awarded it their More Beautiful America award in 1934. During World War II, there was a bit of negativity toward the Japanese, which is why you see this card labeled as Oriental Garden. You may also see Chinese Garden on some cards. These tactics did not prevent patriotic vandals from ruining the beautiful fruits of Maddox's labor. Today it's greatly improved and getting better all the time.
